Sunrise Engagement followed by another day at Hanauma Bay

On Friday we had plans to snorkel Hanauma Bay again, Justin woke me up before the sun had come up, in my hazy, just woken brain I figured we were going to catch a sunrise, probably on the beach. We spread the towels out on Lanikai Beach and waited for the sun to peak over the moke islands. When the sun was at its prime, displaying magnificent colors, Justin pulled a ring out of his pocket and asked me to make him this happy forever, I said “yes.”

Then it was time for a little morning yoga.

We headed back to the apartment to take a nap before heading to Hanauma Bay. Because it had been less than a year since we signed the sheet indicating that we watched the safety video we were able to bypass it and head straight to the bay. We threw our excess gear in the locker, dropper our cooler and towels on the beach and headed in for some snorkeling. The tide was really low, forcing us to navigate our way through a maze of rocks and coral to get to deeper waters with a wider variety of fish. Justin said the tide was rougher than the previous time we had visited the bay, but I hadn’t noticed. I borrowed his spare mask to avoid the issues I had last time, I was able to stay down longer to enjoy the views so I became oblivious (yet still aware) of the current which was gently swaying some of the fish.

We snorkeled until we worked up a strong appetite then headed into shore to make some sandwiches and relax on the beach. The route back to shore was even more tricky, I followed behind Justin’s bubbles because the ‘paths’ between coral walls were narrow. We got to a point of no return where the water only covered the reef a few inches at the top, we had to time it so that we could use those few inches to shimmy across without a wave coming in on top to drag us along the coral.

**Note: there are videos that will be posted when I am able to convert them.**

Then we headed back to the apartment to put the back seat in the jeep and get around for dinner. We picked up Ryan and headed down to Haleiwa Joe’s for his birthday dinner. I ate a pound of Alaskan King Crab Legs, rice and vegetables, the food was absolutely incredible, and the crab legs were so plump. I washed it all down with two Li Hing Mui Margaritas and a Fishbowl. I was super excited to eat the fruit as a ‘fruit salad’ after I had finished my drink (with Ryan’s assistance). However, Justin snagged a cherry at the beginning, I had one slice of pineapple then a girl came out of nowhere like a ninja and snatched it off the table, with the fruit still attached, to ‘get it out of my way,’ I didn’t even get a chance to tell her I wanted to fruit! Haha ohh well… lesson learned.

Secret Island

On Monday we went to Secret Island, another excursion offered by Kualoa Ranch. From the ranch we took a short bus ride to a dock where we boarded a 40′ catamaran to cross over to Secret Island. Once there we had several leisure activities to choose from, we started out taking a ride on the glass bottom boat to look for sea turtles as well as enjoy the views. Recent rain made the water a bit murky so visibility through the glass bottom was not the greatest, however we did manage to spot several sea turtles. The captain pointed out in the distance where the helicopter pad and main gate are being built on the ranch for the filming of Jurassic Park 4.

After the boat trip we sat down at a picnic table under the shade to eat the lunch we had brought with us. We had about an hour left until we had to be back at the dock to catch the catamaran. We had several options of activities to choose from, including SUP boarding and kayaking, however live jackets were required and we were only permitted to use them in a small roped off area. We opted for swimming around in the water and relaxing on one of the hammocks.

Sharks!

I was finally able to cross another one of my main goals off my Hawaii bucket list when we woke up early to swim with sharks! I sprung out of bed at 0500 on Sunday morning, we grabbed our pack filled with towels, snorkeling gear, and plenty of extra batteries for the Gopro, jumped in the jeep and headed north. We stopped to capture a quick picture of the sunrise, then continued north to Haleiwa.

We stopped at McDonald’s to hit up some breakfast, I was pretty upset because I was craving a steak egg and cheese bagel, but I was S.O.L. then we went over to the Haleiwa Boat Harbor to wait for Tony to join us. We got on the boat owned by North Shore Shark Adventures with 9 other people and headed 3 miles out to where the cage had been set up earlier in the morning. On the way out we saw several flying fish, unfortunately I was not able to get any pictures. North Shore Shark Adventures is able to guarantee shark sightings on their tours because for several decades crab boats would come out to these waters and the sharks associated the sound of the boat engines with a feast of crabs. So NSSA use the same engine to trick the sharks into showing up when they get there, no chumming necessary, they also throw a red aluminum water bottle attached to the string to keep their attention. We got into the cages in two separate groups for twenty minutes each, we were the second group. We saw 8 Galapagos Sharks, averaging about 10′. When our time was up they practically had to drag me out of the cage because I did not want to leave, I would have stayed there all day if they let me!
